Despite being ill, Timo Werner started for RB Leipzig on Saturday and scored a wonder goal to help them to a 3-0 win over Borussia Mönchengladbach.
An infection apparently forced Werner to take painkillers before the game.
“You have to say that Timo really went beyond his limits. He took pills to be able to play today,” RB Leipzig coach Marco Rose told reporters after the game.
The 27-year-old started on the bench against Dortmund last week due to an infection and had been unable to train consistently throughout the week. Whether he would be able to play against Gladbach was questionable for a long time.
Nevertheless, Werner wasn’t too keen on being substituted towards the end of yesterday’s game.
As revealed by Rose, Werner said:
“Now you’re taking me off just when it’s starting to be fun?”
But with an eye on the Champions League round of 16 second leg against Manchester City, the Leipzig coach decided to take off the star striker after 76 minutes.
“We need his pace on Tuesday,” noted Rose and added that the goal should “give Werner a boost”.
