Rom Lukaku emotional after late Napoli goal: “Before I came here, I was dead”

Serie A giants Napoli picked up a 2-1 win over Hellas Verona earlier today and it came courtesy of a last-ditch Romelu Lukaku goal.

It was the Belgian’s first Serie A goal of the season. He struggled with injuries in the first half of the campaign and only returned some weeks ago.

His strike helped Napoli get all three points when things weren’t going their way. Even before this game, they came across inconsistency and things are coming back to the right track now.

Lukaku spoke to DAZN about the result and he was quite emotional. He said – relayed by TMW: “I’m happy for the team. It’s a shame about the goal we conceded, but we brought home the three points. These have been difficult months, on a personal level. Football has given me so much, and losing my father like I did is hard.

He also expressed gratitude to Napoli, making it clear that he is now essentially living for his kids and it gives him a sense of purpose in life.

“I’m moving forward for my children, for my brothers, and for Napoli, which has given me so much. Before I came here, I was dead. This year is difficult, but we have to aim high.”

These are indications of the fact that Lukaku clearly had a difficult few months. Beyond his injury, he also lost his father who he was quite close to. He also had another injury after he initially returned and that didn’t help him at all.

Now, he would hope to help Napoli move back up to the table and pick up some form again.
