In a recent report, Fichajes revealed that Real Madrid have set their sights on Manchester United forward Edinson Cavani who will become a free agent at the end of this month. It has been mentioned that Los Blancos have identified the Uruguay international as an option for the summer transfer window.

Cavani’s Unimpressive Spell At The Theatre Of Dreams

Cavani had a tough season at Old Trafford as he struggled to earn regular playing time for Man United. The 35-year-old made 20 appearances for the Red Devils in the previous campaign, finding the back of the opposition net twice and picking up one assist across various competitions.

The veteran striker saw a lot of his playing time come off the bench which could be why he only averaged 1.2 shots, 0.5 key passes and 0.3 dribbles per game in Premier League football. He distributed the ball relatively well after making 76.1% of his attempted passes in the English top-flight (stats via whoscored).

Should Real Madrid Boss Carlo Ancelotti Go For Cavani?

Cavani is an experienced forward who can still be a decent finisher in the final third when he is playing with confidence on the field. He can even set up some promising chances for others around him. Cavani has mostly played as a centre-forward recently but is versatile enough to fill in as a winger if needed.

However, the Uruguay international has struggled to justify his worth in England, so a move to Real Madrid makes sense for the player at this stage of his playing career. He could prove to be a good rotational piece for the reigning La Liga champions next season.

We can expect Cavani to add more depth to Los Blancos head coach Carlo Ancelotti‘s match-day squad. He will offer some healthy competition for Karim Benzema at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium and could help the Madrid giants challenge for even more major honours in the upcoming campaign.

However, at 35, Cavani is a player on the decline as father time is catching up with his game. Hence, Ancelotti should only consider offering him a short-term contract when he becomes a free agent later this summer.
