PSV have identified Borussia Dortmund’s Donyell Malen (23) as a short-term replacement for Cody Gakpo, according to Ruhr Nachrichten – the Eredivisie side are hoping to sign the Dutchman on a 6-month loan.
This comes after Gakpo joined Liverpool for a reported €42m but as of yet, there is no discussions between PSV and Borussia Dortmund and per RN, a transfer this month would be unlikely.
Marcel Brands, sporting director at PSV, was responsible for bringing Malen to the Dutch club from Arsenal in 2017 and has been monitoring the Dutchman’s development at BVB since his departure in 2021.
Malen has struggled in Dortmund since his €30m move in 2021. The 23-year-old has scored 10 and created nine across 55 games in all competitions, but has just one goal in 17 games under Edin Terzic.
But because of BVB’s lack of options in the wide areas, a departure from the Bundesliga side is unlikely. Gio Reyna is yet to reach his peak after injuries resulted in the American missing 39 games in the last 18 months. Jamie Bynoe-Gittens is also sidelined and Karim Adeyemi provides Thorgan Hazard with competition.
