PSG’s Sergio Rico remains hospitalised after horse riding accident

Following this morning’s reports that he was hospitalised with a head injury in Seville after a collision with a horse, Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Sergio Rico’s agency has released a statement tonight to clarify the Spaniard’s situation.

The statement explains that the 29-year-old travelled to the village of El Rocío in Andalusia for a pilgrimage in the wake of his team’s title celebrations in Strasbourg last night, after which the players were allowed the day off this Sunday. This morning, he was with his family and friends, and during a procession on their way to mass an accident involving a mule-drawn carriage saw a horse hit Sergio Rico.

His agency indicates that he is “in good hands” and “fighting to get better”, at the Virgen del Rocío hospital in the regional capital, but that they must be careful over the next 48 hours. The results of the medical exams he undertook on arriving to hospital are not known as of yet.

Earlier in the afternoon, Paris Saint-Germain had indicated to AFP that the goalkeeper’s condition was serious. Both PSG and his former club Sevilla have publicly announced their best wishes to the goalkeeper, while his teammates Nuno Mendes and Kylian Mbappé have also paid tribute to the Spaniard at tonight’s UNFP awards.
