PSG playmaker Lionel Messi has further etched his name in football history by overtaking Cristiano Ronaldo as the highest goalscorer in the history of European football’s top five leagues. Following some good work on the wing from Kylian Mbappé, the Argentine World Cup winner found the back of Strasbourg’s net on Saturday night on the hour mark. It was his 496th club goal, more than 18 years after his very first strike with Barcelona on May 1, 2005. Messi’s record-breaking goal was also of vital importance for the Christophe Galtier-led side – PSG eventually conceded a 1-1 away draw against the Alsatians, but it was enough to seal their record 11th league title.
PSG’s Ligue 1 title also means that Messi is now the most decorated player in world football, tied with former Barcelona teammate Dani Alves. The 7-time Ballon d’Or winner has lifted an astonishing tally of 43 trophies. Messi’s 32nd goal with PSG since his arrival two years ago may be his last, as he is set to leave the French capital at the end of his contract. The former Barcelona man is expected to say his farewell to the Parc des Princes next week, with the newly crowned Ligue 1 champions to host Clermont next Saturday.
