Paris Saint-Germain director Luis Campos has confirmed they are engaged in negotiations with Lionel Messi over a new contract.
The 35-year-old’s current deal at the Parc des Princes expires next summer, and PSG are yet to reach an agreement.
Recent reports from Marca suggest the World Cup winner is unwilling to extend his stay in Paris.
However, Campos insists they are in talks with the Argentine to tie him to a new deal.
“At the moment, we are in discussions with Messi for his extension – I would like to keep him in this project, I can’t hide it,” he told Telefoot.
“We are talking at the moment to achieve this goal and continue to have him with us.”
Messi has turned 35, but he is still playing impressively at the top level of football.
The former Barcelona star failed to make a big impact in the Ligue 1 in his first season, registering only six goals from 26 appearances.
But he has made a huge comeback this term, netting ten goals and ten assists in 18 league appearances.
Messi also won the 2022 World Cup with Argentina, an achievement which had previously eluded him.
The forward netted seven goals in the prestigious tournament, including a brace in the final against France.
He is now on course to win the Ballon d’Or in 2023. His teammate Kylian Mbappe could give him some competition as he was also in the form of his life at the World Cup.
But as the Argentine ultimately got his hands on the coveted trophy in Qatar, Messi will likely win the Ballon d’Or this year.
