Pressure mounting on Tedesco as Leipzig’s winless streak continues

Things have far from gone according to plan for RB Leipzig this season, with ‘Die Roten Bullen’ sitting 11th in the Bundesliga with two points after three games. Although it’s still early days, the pressure is beginning to ramp up on head coach Domenico Tedesco.

RB Leipzig coach Domenico Tedesco has come under increased pressure after Saturday’s 2-1 defeat at the hands of Union Berlin, with Bild reporting that the 36-year-old has to “fight for his job”.
Tedesco impressed last season after taking the reins from Jesse Marsch in December as he pulled Leipzig out of a slump, guiding the club to a fourth-place finish, the Europa League semi-final and the DFB-Pokal trophy.

However, the start to the 2022/23 campaign has been far from optimal for ‘Die Roten Bullen’, who have lost 3-5 to Bayern in the Supercup and taken just two points from their first three Bundesliga games.

Club CEO Oliver Mintzlaff already voiced his frustration after Leipzig’s 2-2 draw with Köln on Matchday 2, saying it had been “shitty start to the season”, but he remained silent after Saturday’s defeat in Berlin – at least publicly.

After his public outburst, Mintzlaff visited the squad in the dressing room in the course of last week, as revealed by captain Willi Orban. What Mintzlaff discussed with the players is unclear, but Tedesco clearly knew nothing about the conversation.

“I didn’t notice that at all. I wasn’t there,” Tedesco told Süddeutsche, looking perplexed.

Tedesco and Leipzig will get their next chance to pick up three points when they welcome VfL Wolfsburg to the Red Bull Arena on Saturday.
