To say Ruben Amorim’s 14 months in charge were tumultuous would be a sheer understatement. From breaking a television, becoming a record-breaker – and not in a positive way – and losing the 2024/25 Europa League final, it almost became inevitable that he would be dismissed from his role Manchester United head coach at some point.
That news finally came to fruition on Monday morning after it had initially appeared that the Red Devils’ 1-1 draw with Leeds United at the weekend was the tipping point in Amorim’s future. However, fresh reports suggest the club’s hierarchy had already planned to part ways with the 40-year-old prior to a trip to Elland Road, despite Sir Jim Ratcliffe only recently maintaining that Amorim deserved the chance to see out his contract, which runs until the summer of 2027.It merely transpired that another draw extended his final run as United boss to just three wins in 11 Premier League matches. With the issues that led to the Red Devils’ worst-ever Premier League finish in the 2024/25 campaign showing little sign of improvement, the club must now return to square one once again, with 20 potential successors already named in the fallout. And for those still unsure whether it was the right decision, then a look at the league table thattakes into consideration all matches since the Portuguese’s appointment might help paint a clearer picture.
The Premier League Table During Amorim’s Man Utd Reign: 23-11
Southampton, thanks to being so poor from start to finish in 2024/25, are widely regarded as one of the worst teams in Premier League history. Under the guidance of Russell Martin and Ivan Juric, the side from the south coast ultimately failed to produce on any front – and, in the 27 topflight games during Amorim’s reign, they picked up just eight points.
That’s two less than Scott Parker’s Burnley have managed to accrue in seven fewer matches, having been promoted to the Premier League after finishing well in the Championship last term. Leeds United, too, are among the promoted sides that have fared in the promised land much better than Saints – the latter have picked up 11 points.
Ipswich Town and Leicester City, two sides who faced the sight of relegation after tricky seasons in the top flight, would be positioned in 20th and 21st, respectively.
Bucking the trend from recent seasons, Sunderland are absolutely flying under the watchful eye of Regis Le Bris – they’ve earned 30 points from 20 matches and have managed to finish higher than a trio of aforementioned sides, all of whom have racked up many more games in the Premier League in the allotted period.
In 46 matches, Wolverhampton Wanderers have bagged just 12 victories – and their lowly finish would largely be down to how poorly they’ve started 2025/26 under Vitor Pereira and now Rob Edwards, even though they were able to earn an unlikely draw at Old Trafford recently. Tottenham Hotspur are similar to United in terms of how last season went, as they finished poorly domestically but reached a European final.
Under Ange Postecoglou, they won Europe’s second-tier competition but, in the Premier League, things were less than impressive with just 13 wins and seven draws in 47 matches since Amorim tipped up at Old Trafford. Fellow London club West Ham United would’ve picked up just four fewer points in the time period.
The man of the hour, Amorim’s side have struggled on many fronts – and that includes the Premier League. In 47 matches, the Red Devils have picked up 58 points, which is six fewer than Nottingham Forest in 13th, who have had three different managers in that time. Fulham and Bournemouth round off the bottom half of the Premier League table of the Amorim era on 64 points apiece.

The Premier League Table During Amorim’s Man Utd Reign: 10-1
Now in far more pristine condition since the return of David Moyes – which also brought about a change in stadium, ownership, and ambition – the Toffees would be slap-bang in the middle of a 20-team table during Amorim’s reign.
Ahead of them would be Brighton & Hove Albion – led by the youngest permanent manager in Premier League history, Fabian Hurzeler – and Brentford, who have been the top flight’s surprise package over the last couple of seasons. Players have come and gone for Keith Andrews and his entourage but the Englishman’s well-drilled outfit have ensured not to see their performances wane.
Similarly to the Bees, Crystal Palace are becoming the Premier League darlings. The Eagles – the reigning champions of the FA Cup after beating Manchester City at Wembley – have lost just 12 times.
Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United are on 77 points. Thanks to their 26 wins and nine draws, Aston Villa creep into the top four with 63 points and are six points above Chelsea who, rather confusingly, let manager Enzo Maresca leave the club too easily upon his first disagreement with the club’s hierarchy.
Missing out on the top spot are Manchester City and Liverpool, who would be ranked in third and second, respectively. The latter are the current defending champions of England’s top flight, of course, but their hodgepodge start to the 2025/26 campaign – with their summer additions struggling to gel – have seen them lose more than double the number of games than table-topping Arsenal.
The Gunners, despite coming second in back-to-back-to-back seasons in the Premier League, have always been there or thereabouts in discussions about who will win the title – and that’s evidenced by their position at the top of this table. Mikel Arteta’s men have won the most matches in the time period in question and that’s resulted in a points haul of 100.
