Police Issue Response Amid Fan Plan at Anfield

Liverpool will welcome Manchester City to Anfield on Sunday afternoon in the first Premier League clash since their 114 guilty verdicts were returned.

The Cityzens have been found guilty of 114 breaches of financial rules between 2009 and 2018, in a statement ruling from the Premier League which could potentially see them relegated, or even kicked out of football entirely as a result.

City have maintained their innocence throughout the process and have lodged a formal appeal, delaying any sanctions in the meantime, but many fans have already made their minds up about the situation, which is now expected to receive a hostile reception at the majority of their away games for the foreseeable future.

Liverpool and City have had a fierce rivalry over the last decade, and should the charges be ultimately proven, then it’s possible that the Reds could be awarded a historic title, having finished as runners-up behind City during the period of their alleged cheating.

Now Reds fans are planning to welcome City to Anfield on Sunday in their masses ahead of the game, with a social media post going viral encouraging fans to line the streets in advance and crank up the hostility.

“Bus greeting vs Cheats.

“Sunday 11th October vs Man City.

“Around 14:30-15:00.

“Line Anfield Road starting from the King Harry pub to the ground.

“Bring flags, banners pyros, flares, Koppabergs, and lets make it a sea of red.

“Show them. Scare them.”

The call for Koppaberg is a throwback to 2018 when City were bombarded en route to a Champions League quarter-final clash. On that occasion, City’s bus was hit with bricks and bottles, which caused thousands of pounds of damage, and meant that the bus wasn’t in a condition to drive them home after the game.

No arrests were made on that occasion, much to the dismay of senior chiefs at Man City. Fans also threw objects at the club bus in 2014 and 2022, while there was a similar post in 2024, but police were able to divert the route away from the crowd.

Now, according to The Sun, police have responded to the plans for Sunday’s game.

“Police on Merseyside say they are aware of the social media post which appeared in the last few days and have insisted all week that an ‘appropriate policing plan will be in place’.”

The Kop are likely to be on top form for the game, having had an unbeaten start to their season under Andoni Iraola, while Man City come into the game top of the league after a perfect start with seven wins from seven games in all competitions under new boss Enzo Maresca.

Liverpool sources have told the BBC this week that they are treating the game as ‘business as usual’, despite the fact feelings are running high, but fans will be treating this as a special occasion.
