Manchester United are unlikely to bring Scott McTominay back to Old Trafford, despite fresh speculation around a possible reunion.
The Scotland international has been outstanding since leaving United for Napoli in 2024, winning Serie A and becoming one of the most influential midfielders in Italy.
That success has inevitably led to questions over whether United made a mistake letting him go in the first place.
A return has been discussed, but the club’s recruitment strategy now appears to be pointing in a different direction.
McTominay no longer fits United’s preferred transfer profile

According to Football Insider, United are unlikely to make a serious attempt to re-sign McTominay.
The main issue is age. McTominay is 29 and will turn 30 in December, while United’s hierarchy are placing greater emphasis on signing younger players who can become long-term parts of the squad.
That does not mean his time in Italy has gone unnoticed. He helped Napoli win the Serie A title in his first season and was named the league’s MVP, before scoring 14 goals in all competitions last term.
He has also just returned to full training after being medically cleared following a minor heart procedure, meaning he is available again for Napoli.
Rooney praise shows why Man United fans want him back

There is still a strong argument that McTominay could improve United right now.
Wayne Rooney certainly thinks so.
Speaking on The Wayne Rooney Show, Rooney said: “I couldn’t believe Man United let him go when they did because he obviously works extremely hard.”
He later added: “You’d love to have him back at Man United now.” Those comments were reported by SoccerNews.
That sums up the frustration for some supporters.
McTominay offers goals, physicality, leadership and a willingness to make late runs into the box, qualities United have not always had in abundance since his departure.
Still, the club cannot build purely around nostalgia. If the plan is genuinely to create a younger squad with more long-term value, moving for a midfielder approaching 30 would go against that strategy.
United may admire what McTominay has become, but a reunion now looks more sentimental than realistic.
