In the aftermath of the tragic news of the death of Diogo Jota, Portugal were beaten 4-0 by Spain at Euro 2025. Spanish left-back Olga Carmona put a through ball into Esther Gonzalez, who put Spain 1-0 up after only two minutes.
After only seven minutes, Spain doubled their lead. Portugal were not able to clear their lines and Vicky Lopez converted Mariona Caldentey’s side-footed cross. At this stage, Portugal could not retain possession in the face of Spain’s high press.
Four minutes before the break, Spain made it 3-0. Alexia Putelles ran off the back of Diana Gomes and looked to shoot with her left, before cutting back onto her right to score. Spain were really in the groove by now.
Two minutes later they made it four, when Gonzalez got her second. It left Portugal with a mountain to climb in the second-half. Naturally, the second-half was a more pedestrian affair. Fortunately for Portugal, Spain took their foot off of the gas in a formidable win. They were given a further boost when Aitana Bonmati came on for the last nine minutes. Spain put the icing on the cake when Cristina Martin-Prieto got a fifth in injury time.
