Pierre Sage signs two-year deal at Lyon

After orchestrating one of the great comeback stories last season, Pierre Sage has been rewarded with a new contract as manager of Olympique Lyonnais.

Sage inherited a Lyon side that was rock-bottom of Ligue 1 in December. The Ligue 1 giants looked destined for a shock relegation to the second-tier of French football. However, he steered OL back on course. Despite being in the relegation zone as recently as February, by the end of May, Les Gones had miraculously qualified for next season’s UEFA Europa League and had also reached the final of the Coupe de France, which they ultimately lost against Paris Saint-Germain.

Lyon’s season could have been catastrophic – it nearly was, but for Sage. The Frenchman, who was promoted internally at the club when he became manager, has signed a new two-year deal.

No longer an interim and now in possession of his coaching badges, the 45-year-old will lead Lyon in Europe next season. “We have to write history for our club,” said Sage upon the announcement of his two-year deal. Three new members have been added to his technical team: Jorge Maciel (assistant manager of training methodology), Rui Lemos (assistant manager of athletic preparation) and Denis Valour (performance co-ordinator).
