In the main event of UFC 315, Jack Della Maddalena defeated Belal Muhammad via unanimous decision to become the new UFC welterweight champion. Although Muhammad vs Della Maddalena was probably the most underhyped UFC pay-per-view headliner of 2025 so far, the fight absolutely delivered and was a strong, early contender for Fight of the Year.
Watching the fight play out and looking at the striking stats after the fight, the story of the bout was Muhammad’s volume vs Della Maddalena’s power. ‘Remember The Name’ kept throwing for the whole five rounds, but just never had anywhere near the same amount of venom in his shots as the Australian. Della Maddalena, to hardcore MMA fans, prior to this fight, was known to be one of the most skilled and dangerous boxers in the UFC, and this performance showed it.
Della Maddalena’s pin-point accurate strikes throughout the 25-minute fight took their toll on Muhammad’s face, so much so that the Chicago native was left with a bunch of brutal facial injuries, which UFC president Dana White showcased on his social media following the conclusion of UFC 315.

Belal Muhammad Suffered Several Brutal Injuries in his Fight Against Jack Della Maddalena at UFC 315
Muhammad was left with a barrage of injuries, including a badly split lip
If losing the UFC welterweight title in the main event of UFC 315 didn’t hurt Belal Muhammad enough, the brutal facial injuries he suffered will make up for it. To the surprise of many MMA fans around the world, Muhammad vs Jack Della Maddalena was contested on the feet for the large majority of the fight, which is surprising given the fact that Muhammad’s key to success over the years on his road to welterweight gold has been his wrestling and grappling pressure.
Della Maddalena did well to defend the takedowns of Muhammad, but ‘Remember The Name’ didn’t fight to his strengths and ended up paying for it. The Australian, who is known for his boxing skills, pieced up Muhammad on the feet for five rounds, and the damage to the former champion’s face got worse and worse as the fight went on. Fans watching at home could see the damage to Muhammad’s face, and it looked bad, but UFC president Dana White posted an up-close image of the former champion’s face following the fight, and his injuries are brutal.
As White’s post says, Muhammad suffered an array of brutal facial injuries, including a broken nose, broken orbital bone and a badly split lip. Coming into this fight, Muhammad was hoping to be one of the most active fighters in the UFC, however, after suffering such brutal injuries and taking so much damage, we may not see him back in the UFC Octagon until 2026. This is because the athletic commission alone will issue a medical suspension on Muhammad, meaning he can’t spar, or compete, for the length of that ban — typically 45 days to 6 months.
