Kicker reports that Philipp Lienhart could leave Freiburg due to a release clause in his contract that is active in the summer.
The 26-year-old’s contract expires in 2024, but due to a release clause in his contract, he can leave in the summer. Lienhart has reportedly attracted interest from several unnamed teams and this has caused Freiburg to try and extend his contract.
The Austrian last signed a contract extension in 2021 and is currently valued at €20 million by transfermarkt.
Lienhart joined Freiburg in 2017 on loan from Real Madrid before making the loan permanent a year later. He has gone on to become a key part of Freiburg’s strong defence over the past couple of years and this season has played 30 times for Freiburg scoring once.
Freiburg are currently fifth in the Bundesliga five points off of Bayern Munich in first place. Since the start of the new year, Freiburg have struggled to match the form of the first half of the season and have not looked their usual selves in defence.
