Official | Werder close chapter of Man United flop Isak Hansen-Aarøen (21) with Nijmegen sale

Werder Bremen have finally confirmed the permanent departure of Norwegian attacking midfielder Isak Hansen-Aarøen via a sale to NEC Nijmegen. The now 21-year-old Manchester United academy man departs Bremen for good almost precisely two years after he arrived on the winter 2024 transfer deadline day. Hansen-Aarøen proved a total flop who only made four Bremen first team appearances over the course of two calendar years.

Bremen have been trying to offload Isak Hansen-Aarøen all year

After the Norwegian U21 international returned from a spring loan 2024 loan stint at Aalborg BK in Denmark, Hansen-Aarøen was considered total dead weight at his Bundesliga outfit during both the summer and winter transfer windows.Bremen paid Man United a reported €200,000 to secure Hansen-Aarøen’s services. As of yet, no sources are reporting how much Werder have recouped from the Eredivisie outfit.

Bremen confirm first transaction since Horst Steffen sacking

Luckily for the Bremen front office, the Hansen-Aarøen deal had long been in the works prior to the storm that began brewing yesterday. After it was confirmed earlier today that head coach Horst Steffen had indeed been sacked, Bremen chief personnel executive Clemens Fritz (himself fearing for his job) has spent most of the day in full damage control mode.

Fritz’s Sunday revolved around press conferences and media roundtables during which he promised to find an external solution for the vacant head coaching position, yet couldn’t coherently explain how the search might go about. As a result, it was sporting director Peter Niemeyer who ended up handling the Hansen-Aarøen statement.

Statement on Hansen-Aarøen departure

It’s no secret that we have been working with Isak to find a solution that would further his sporting prospects,” Niemeyer noted in a club statement. “We have now found that solution with a transfer to Nijmegen.
