As communicated on their official website, Nijmegen have completed the signing of Jasper Cillessen from Valencia.
The Eredivisie side paid €1 million to secure the services of Cillessen who came through the club’s youth academy.
More importantly, the move has allowed Valencia to offload a player whose wages prevented the club from making new signings.
Even though the Dutch international arrived to Los Che with high expectations from Barcelona, Georgian Giorgi Mamardashvili has overtaken Cillessen as the club’s first-choice keeper.
The 33-year-old has signed a three-year contract with the club and is expected to be a part of the starting XI.
Nijmegen hope to improve upon their Eredivisie campaign last season, when they finished just four points above the relegation play-off position.
Technical director Ted van Leeuwen was very pleased with Cillessen’s arrival:
“Jasper is a goalkeeper with exceptional qualities, the best in the Netherlands. If you have the opportunity to bring in such a goalkeeper, you should never hesitate. We were not looking for a goalkeeper, but the goalkeeper found us.”
