Montpellier have officially been relegated to Ligue 2 after results in Ligue 1 today confirmed their fate. Le Havre drew 1-1 with Monaco on Saturday evening, and this result means that it is mathematically impossible for the club to achieve enough points to stay in the French first division.
The 2012 champions have largely struggled this season. With a dismal total of 15 points, Montpellier have been cut adrift for most of the season. Goals have been hard to comeby in an attacking sense and in contrast, plentiful for their opponents. La Paillade have conceded 71 goals at the time of writing and have only scored 22 – leading to a goal difference of -49.
One down, two to go?
With Montpellier’s place in Ligue 2 confirmed next season, at least one more team will be relegated from the French top flight. At present, Saint-Étienne sit in 17th which would see them relegated if they remain there at the end of the season. A third team could be relegated if they fail to win the relegation play-off.
