Official | Florian Wirtz signs Bayer Leverkusen contract extension

Bayer Leverkusen have this afternoon announced the contract extension of Florian Wirtz by one-year until 2027.

The 19-year-old offensive player suffered a cruciate ligament injury in the Rheinderby against FC Köln in mid-March and is unlikely to be fit enough for the start of the season, with his place in Germany’s World Cup squad in jeopardy.

Prior to his injury, Wirtz scored 10 and created 14 in 31 games in all competitions last season for Bayer Leverkusen.

Wirtz signed his previous contract extension in May 2021 until 2026 but is now tied to the club until 2027.

This is an excellent move for Die Werkself, who earlier tied Patrik Schick down to a new contract whilst Adam Hložek joined from Sparta Prague. With Moussa Diaby in attack, Bayer Leverkusen look to be an exciting side to watch next season.

Wirtz’ contract extension is the second one today following RB Leipzig’s extension of 24-year-old Christopher Nkunku until 2026.
