Borussia Mönchengladbach confirmed the departure of Nils Schmadtke and the arrival of David Zibung as part of a front-office administrative shake up on Thursday afternoon.

Shortly after expressing joy that his club would be hosting the opening fixture of the 2024/25 Bundesliga campaign, Borussia Mönchengladbach managing director Roland Virkus confirmed an administrative shake-up in his front office. Nils Schmadtke, the son of famous German footballing administrator Jörg Schmadtke, will be departing the foals after just one year in office. Schmadtke served as the club’s licensing head. FC Luzern executive David Zibung will arrive to take up the newly created post of “sporting coordinator”.

“We sat down together after the season and, after intensive discussions, came to the mutual conclusion to end our collaboration,” Virkus noted in a club statement, “But we are parting on good terms. We would like to thank Nils for his commitment and the work he has done and wish him all the best for his professional and private future.”

The bottom line is that it wasn’t 100 percent right for both sides in this constellation,” the 35-year-old Schmadtke noted in his own statement, “That’s why parting ways is the best decision for everyone.”

Zibung will take on some of Schmadtke’s administrative duties while Virkus and scouting director Steffen Korell maintain most of the responsibility for squad planning. Gladbach get set to enter their second season under head-coach Gerardo Seoane; the first time since 2021 that a trainer has been given more than one year with the team.
