Newcastle United could find themselves in a spot of bother in the summer transfer window with a number of high-profile player exits and Martin Keown believes Bruno Guimaraes could follow Sandro Tonali out of the club.
Tonali has been linked with both Arsenal and Manchester United in recent weeks, with the Gunners even linked with a January transfer window deadline day move to sign the Italian briefly until the rumours were quashed.
United have placed Tonali towards the top of the summer transfer wishlist, according to reports, with Casemiro leaving Old Trafford at the end of his current contract.
Newcastle Must Improve To Keep Hold Of Star Players
The Magpies are 12th in the Premier League table and were knocked out of the Carabao Cup at the semi-final stage last week. A big FA Cup third round clash with Aston Villa awaits next weekend, with the UEFA Champions League play-off clash with Qarabag on the horizon too, so things are not all bad at St James’ Park by any stretch.
But with Tonali already thinking about leaving the north east, others could follow if the Magpies do not manage to improve their league position and fail to qualify for European competition next season.
Martin Keown Thinks Bruno Guimaraes Could Leave
Speaking on TalkSport, former Arsenal defender Keown sent a warning to the Newcastle fans about key man Guimaraes.
“You do have to have sympathy with Eddie [Howe] and the supporters because one by one they cherry-pick these players. Isak was obviously the player last year, we all know Tonali, Bruno will be the next one.
“You need to do well, secure Champions League football otherwise, one by one you lose these players and it’s only going to cost more money to bring the next generation in.”
Guimaraes Stats And Thoughts On Transfer Plans
Across all competitions Guimaraes has featured in more than 30 matches, with eight goals and six assists in total.
The Brazilian is contributing not just goals and assists, but also involvement in build-up play (key passes, duels won) and solid passing performance, making him one of Newcastle’s standout midfielders this season.
Guimaraes is under contract until June 2028, after signing a five-year extension in late 2023, although he has a release clause of £100million.
He has previously stated that for him to leave, it would have to be “something great for the club,” rather than just for himself, noting that he is “very much at home and living a dream” in Newcastle.
