Sport Bild report that Newcastle United are among four Premier League clubs interested in signing Freiburg’s Merlin Röhl. Liverpool, Crystal Palace and Everton are also in the running to sign the German youth international, with club officials from the latter already holding talks with the midfielder’s representatives.
Freiburg are demanding more than €20m for Röhl, who played a key role as the Black Forest club secured Europa League football for the 2025/26 campaign. Primarily an attack-minded midfielder, Röhl showcases excellent stamina and box-to-box capabilities, playing 20 games across all competitions for Julian Schuster’s team either side of ankle and heel injuries.
A busy summer for Freiburg
It’s already been a busy summer for Freiburg. They’ve announced the contract extension of Vincenzo Grifo and have signed Derry Scherhant (Hertha Berlin), Cyriaque Irié (Troyes) and Yuito Suzuki (Brondby) for a combined €20.5m, but they are also expected to have some outgoings. Both Ritsu Doan and Kiliann Sildillia also linked with moves away.
