Newcastle deal for ‘outstanding’ talent could ‘open up’ at St James’ Park

Newcastle United are admirers of Leeds United starlet Cody Drameh and it is “plausible” that the Magpies could negotiate a deal for the youngster to join Eddie Howe’s squad at St. James’ Park, transfer insider Dean Jones has told GiveMeSport.

The right-back has been part of the set-up with the Whites since August 2020 but could potentially move on in the upcoming January transfer window.

Newcastle transfer news – Cody Drameh

Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano revealed this week on the Here We Go podcast that Newcastle are still interested in making a move for Drameh in the new year, having initially reported the club’s interest back in November, with Bayer Leverkusen, Borussia Dortmund and Lille all interested in a possible transfer for the young full-back.

However, Leeds head coach Jesse Marsch has recently spoken in glowing terms when talking about the former Fulham man, stating (via LancsLive): “Cody has been fantastic over the last month and I’m so happy we have gotten to a point with him where he feels so energised by what we’re doing and engaged. Then the decision will be how to continue to push him in the direction for him to be an important player at this club, which he will be. Maybe we need to even think about how it fits now.”

Respected journalist Pete O’Rourke has previously told GiveMeSport that it would be a “big blow” if Leeds were to lose the services of the 21-year-old, suggesting that Newcastle could have a gem of a player on their hands if they were to secure his signature next month.

And Jones has suggested that whilst the transfer of Drameh, who has previously been described as an “outstanding” player by Steve Morison, is not an “absolute priority”, the Magpies do admire the young full-back and a deal is “plausible.”

What has Jones said about Newcastle and Drameh?

When asked about the possibility of Newcastle signing Drameh in January, Jones told GiveMeSport: “They do like him, so it’s plausible that it opens up. I wouldn’t say it’s the absolute priority, but we’ll see.”

How has Drameh performed for Leeds?

Drameh may be feeling a little bit frustrated about his lack of playing time for the senior side at Elland Road, having made just two appearances across the Premier League and Carabao Cup so far this season, according to Transfermarkt.

The same stats provider shows that the London-born right-back has made just seven senior appearances in his time in Yorkshire, suggesting that he may feel his chances of becoming a Premier League regular are best served elsewhere.

With Newcastle very unlikely to drop Kieran Trippier in favour of Drameh, it seems doesn’t seem likely that the young full-back will get more top-flight minutes under his belt in the north east compared to in Yorkshire and therefore this may be a deal that the Magpies put on the backburners for the time being.
