Speaking at his Monday DFB-Presser, Bundestrainer Julian Nagelsmann has confirmed that Joshua Kimmich will henceforth serve as the German national team’s new captain.
Bundestrainer Julian Nagelsmann has confirmed that Joshua Kimmich will inherit the captain’s armband of the German Nationalmannschaft from the retired Ilkay Gündogan. Kai Havertz and Antonio Rüdiger will serve as the direct alternates.
The new team leadership council shall consist of Jonathan Tah, Pascal Groß, Niclas Füllkrug, and new #1 keeper Marc André ter Stegen. All of this was confirmed at Nagelsmann’s first official DFB-Presser following this summer’s quarterfinal Euro exit.
Nagelsmann noted that he still expected Kimmich to work as a right-back for the national team. Kimmich has already snapped on the armband six times for the DFB-XI, most recently in a 0-1 defeat to Poland in June 2023 under former Bundestrainer Hansi Flick.
