Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann has confirmed that Alexander Nübel has been left out of his final squad for the European Championship. “It has nothing to do with his performances,” he explained.
Reports emerged early on Friday that Alexander Nübel had been left out of Germany’s final squad for Euro 2024, with coach Julian Nagelsmann forced to cut his squad by one player to 26.
Speaking on German television on Friday evening, Nagelsmann confirmed Nübel’s omission, saying Leroy Sané’s injury problems towards the end of the season played a large part in his decision to keep an extra outfield player rather than a goalkeeper.
“First of all, it has nothing to do with Alex’s performances. He has integrated very well into the group and has done well in training,” Nagelsmann said, adding:
“At the end of the day, we have some uncertainties with Leroy. We don’t know how much strain he can tolerate.
“The goalkeeper position has the advantage that if someone gets injured, you can always name a replacement. That’s not the case with outfield players. That’s why we prefer to have another outfield player with Leroy in mind. He is close to 100% at the moment, but that was also the case at Bayern and then things changed abruptly.”
