There is no love lost between old UFC rivals Michael Chandler and Paddy Pimblett as the lightweight fighters continue to tear one another apart in the press.
Pimblett, 31, has been on a helluva run since joining the UFC from Cage Warriors, beating the likes of Tony Ferguson, King Green, and Chandler alone in the last two years. And, though he’s already gone three rounds with Chandler — finishing the American with elbows and punches — the score is by no means settled.
It seemingly all started when Pimblett told compatriot and fellow UFC fighter Tom Aspinall that Chandler is pretty much a dirty fighter, fouling, and doing things he shouldn’t be doing in the Octagon. When Ariel Helwani mentioned this to Chandler on the media personality’s long-running TV show Wednesday, the American wasn’t very amused.
Michael Chandler Fires Back at Paddy Pimblett
Pimblett said that, though he likes Chandler, “but in the cage, he’s a dirty b****** … back of the head punches, fingers in people’s mouth.”
Speaking to Helwani, Chandler said he “can’t remember” if he did that against Pimblett. “We threw a kick at the same time, and I kicked him in the balls. Things happen inside the cage, man. I don’t really care what he says.”
He continued: “Bodies move. We’re kicking at the same exact time. You’re making split second decisions while a guy is trying to take your head off. Good luck to him, man.”
“It’s bush league and somewhat beta-male to bring up this stuff.”
While Pimblett returns to the Octagon on Saturday for a headline fight against Justin Gaethje at the UFC 324 card in Las Vegas, Chandler continues to cling on to a Conor McGregor fight, even though UFC boss Dana White recently said it was a rivalry that’s a few years too old now, and hinted that it’s unlikely to happen. Unfazed, Chandler still holds onto hope and told Helwani he doesn’t even have a Plan B, if the McGregor super-event fails to materialize any time soon.
