Despite announcing his departure on Sunday, Medhi Benatia will ultimately remain at Olympique de Marseille, the club’s owner, Frank McCourt, has confirmed.
Benatia announced that he had tendered his resignation on 9th February, just hours before Roberto De Zerbi’s exit as manager. He made the decision public on Sunday, just after Marseille’s 2-2 draw against RC Strasbourg Alsace, via a communiqué posted on his personal Instagram account.
Longoria’s role at Marseille evolves
However, there has now been a spectacular U-turn on Tuesday morning. The Moroccan will remain at the Vélodrome, at least until the end of the season, a press release from McCourt confirmed. Not only that, Benatia will be given greater responsibility over “the entirety of the sporting activities.”
His expanded role will naturally limit the influence of club president Pablo Longoria, as McCourt’s communiqué also confirmed. It spoke of an “evolution” in the Spaniard’s “responsibilities”. He will still be the representative for OM within French and European bodies.
