Newcastle manager Matthias Jaissle is undoubtedly under pressure after losing three of their last four games in all competitions.
Despite the struggles, the Magpies are sitting in eighth position in the Premier League table, but it’s the performance levels and some of the results that will be a huge concern.
The Magpies at Newcastle suffered a 3-1 defeat against Everton in the Carabao Cup on Thursday night, really struggling against a side that hasn’t been at the races recently.
Newcastle also lost at home to Aston Villa while suffering a heavy 4-1 defeat away to newly promoted Coventry City.
In the middle of that, Newcastle did secure a 2-0 victory away at Crystal Palace, but overall, it’s been a disappointing start to life at St James’s Park for Jaissle.
Jaissle’s treatment of two Newcastle stars is bordering on unacceptable at the moment.
The Magpies invested heavily in signing young talents from around the world in the summer transfer window, but Jaissle isn’t giving them the opportunity to impress.
Sean Steur and Aladji Bamba are the two who have been treated unfairly so far this season. Steur came on against Everton in the 81st minute when Newcastle were already 3-0 down, while Bamba remained on the bench.
In their previous Premier League game against Crystal Palace, Bamba was once again an unused substitute, whilst only coming on in the 85th minute.
In their heavy 4-1 defeat against Coventry City, both players remained on the bench for the whole 90 minutes, as was also the case against Aston Villa.
You could understand Jaissle’s decision to not play the young duo if the current crop of Newcastle midfielders were performing well, but that’s simply not the case.
Newcastle are underperforming at the moment, with experienced players letting Jaissle down, but he’s still reluctant to give young players a go.
Jaissle prioritising experience at Newcastle
It’s clear to see that Jaissle is prioritising experience in his lineups rather than giving young players an opportunity.
It’s a similar situation with Jacob Murphy regularly starting over someone like Bazoumana Toure, while Jacob Ramsey, Joe Willock, Harvey Barnes, and even Joelinton have been underperforming.
Jaissle needs to start taking more risks in his team selection if he wants to turn things around at Newcastle.
The experienced players who keep letting him down are going to cost him. If Newcastle want to become a side that develops young players, they need to give them the opportunity to express themselves.
