Manchester United have made enquiries about Atletico Madrid midfielder Pablo Barrios and Barcelona’s Fermin Lopez as they explore options to strengthen their midfield.
The Premier League club are assessing potential reinforcements ahead of the January transfer window and have identified both Spanish players as possible targets.
According to transfer journalist Matteo Moretto, speaking on Radio MARCA’s La Pizarra, United have sought information about the availability of both midfielders.
However, the discussions remain preliminary, with no formal negotiations currently taking place with either club.
“There’s a Premier League club, Manchester United, that has a lot of things to sort out and is looking for a midfielder with the characteristics of Barrios and Fermin,” Moretto explained.
“They’ve inquired about both of them; there’s no negotiation, just an inquiry.”
Barrios has established himself as an important player at Atletico Madrid, making a potential departure particularly difficult to negotiate.
The 23-year-old also featured against United in the Champions League earlier this month, scoring during their meeting at the Metropolitano on October 13.
Moretto revealed that United used their visit to Madrid for that fixture to conduct several meetings as part of their recruitment preparations.
However, it remains unclear whether those discussions involved Atletico officials or representatives of either midfielder.
Fermin, meanwhile, continues to occupy an important role in Barcelona’s plans under head coach Hansi Flick.
The 23-year-old’s attacking qualities and ability to operate in advanced midfield positions have made him an attractive option for clubs seeking greater creativity.
Nevertheless, Barcelona are reluctant to lose a player they consider integral to their sporting project.
Moretto acknowledged that neither transfer would be straightforward, given the importance of both players to their respective clubs.
“It’s very unlikely that both will leave. Pablo Barrios is an indispensable player for Atletico and Fermin is key for Barca,” he said.
The journalist nevertheless stressed that United remain interested in midfielders with similar technical and tactical qualities.
United’s recruitment plans come as the club consider changes to their squad following an inconsistent start to the campaign.
The search for additional midfield quality could become a priority as they prepare for future transfer windows.
However, the club’s initial enquiries should not be interpreted as evidence that formal bids are imminent.
Both Atletico and Barcelona retain strong negotiating positions, while neither player has been reported to be pushing for a departure.
For now, United’s interest remains exploratory, with further developments likely to depend on the clubs’ willingness to consider offers and the players’ own intentions.
