Marseille’s Alexis Sánchez picks up foot injury

Amid a tough run of form and a race for the Champions League spots – and the title, potentially – set to go down to the wire, Marseille will have been hoping to have all of their major players at their disposal.

However, star striker Alexis Sánchez may not be at peak fitness for the trip to Lorient on Sunday night, with the Chilean feeling some discomfort in his foot, according to RMC Sport.

The former Barcelona and Arsenal man, who has 12 goals in Ligue 1 this season leading the line for Les Phocéens, picked up the issue in the match against Reims three weeks ago, and has been carrying it ever since. At training this Friday, the 34-year-old had been wearing a bandage around his right foot at the start of the session, before taking it off and attempting some deeper passing moves.

Reports in Chile have indicated that Sánchez spent the entirety of the international break trying to quell the pain in his foot, and despite this played one half against Paraguay – in which he scored – against OM’s wishes. Having been contacted by RMC, Marseille have not confirmed the news.

The forward is nevertheless determined to soldier on, and completed Marseille’s latest training sessions despite the issue – the team will be hoping that he can be back to his best for the run-in.
