Having seen his captaincy under threat in the midst of a squad overhaul at Paris Saint-Germain this summer, Marquinhos will now retain the skipper’s armband this season after winning a second player vote in the space of a week, L’Équipe report this afternoon.
The Brazilian centre-back, who has been at the club for the past decade, was named captain three years ago in the wake of Thiago Silva’s departure. His middling form last season saw questions raised about his place in the starting eleven, and he is said to be among several PSG senior players to have been courted by Saudi Arabia this summer.
Although Marquinhos started on the bench in the opening match of the season, a 0-0 home draw against Lorient, a subsequent vote among players confirmed his status as captain and he led the team out from the start against Toulouse last Saturday.
Today’s second vote was anonymous, and has brought about the same result as last week – the 29-year-old will remain captain of the Ligue 1 champions.
