Amidst the excitement and nerves ahead of Germany’s must-win game against Costa Rica on Thursday, a significant milestone is being surpassed. Manuel Neuer will become the goalkeeper with the most World Cup appearances as he leads his team out at the Al Bayt Stadium.
In Germany’s last game Neuer made his 17th appearance at the World Cup which tied him at top-spot with Brazil’s Cláudio Taffarel and Germany’s Sepp Maier. Maier had the title from 1978 until Taffarel equalled the record in France in 1998. It’s some achievement by Neuer who made his first appearance way back in South Africa in 2010.
The magnitude of the game will somewhat overshadow the great achievement but perhaps that’s exactly how Neuer would want it. Should Germany win and qualify, Neuer will be able to take in the occasion with fans and players after the game. For Die Mannschaft to secure a last-16 spot, they must beat Costa Rica and hope that Spain beat Japan.
