Manchester United are readying an opening offer for Lisandro Martinez, according to De Telegraaf’s Mike Verweij.
Having already been dealt a major blow in their pursuit of Jurrien Timber, United are now set to turn their attention to another one of Ajax’s defenders as Erik ten Hag is keen to reunite with familiar faces at Old Trafford.
However, The Red Devils could be set to suffer yet another snub as Martinez is reportedly keen on a move to Arsenal, who have already had an initial bid in the region of €30 million knocked back by the Eredivisie giants.
Mikel Arteta’s men are expected to submit a new improved offer for the Argentine centre-back – also capable of filling at left-back and defensive midfield – as the Gunners seek to shore up at the back ahead of the start of the 2022/23 campaign.
United could certainly do with some reinforcement in defence this summer after letting in a whopping 57 goals in 38 games during the just-concluded league season.
Villareal’s Pau Torres has been linked with a switch to the red half of Manchester, while Leicester City’s Wesley Fofana is also thought to be a subject of interest.
Meanwhile, Manchester United are also looking to bolster their options in midfield and attack with deals for Frenkie de Jong and Antony currently being worked on.
With training for their pre-season tour which takes them to Thailand, Australia and Norway set to commence less than a week from now, the 20-time English champions will need to act faster in their transfer dealings as they are yet to complete a Premier League transfer in the current window.
United have also said goodbye to Paul Pogba, Juan Mata, Jesse Lingard, Nemanja Matic and Edinson Cavani, highlighting the urgent need for new acquisitions at the Theatre of Dreams.
