Summary
- Manchester United’s potential starting lineup for the 2025/26 season gives supporters every hope of a new golden era.
- Emiliano Martinez is being rumoured as Andre Onana’s replacement.
- Attack is where the most changes are expected, with Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha already through the door.
Since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement in 2013 – and with it, the end of a reign of terror that took Manchester United to the summit of English football with 13 Premier League titles in 26 years – the Red Devils have been caught in the trance of a never-ending cycle. Every summer brings big spending, high-profile gambles that rarely pay off, and the same routine of disappointment followed by their owners panicking and hitting the reset button 12 months on.
Under Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his INEOS entourage, that reckless trial-and-error philosophy appeared to persist. Last summer’s rebuild saw the likes of Joshua Zirkzee and Matthijs de Ligt come in, only to fall by the wayside, prompting yet another revamp this time around. Barely a week into this summer’s transfer window, however, United’s early dealings suggest a shift in approach – marked by clearer intent, structure, and a sense of genuine purpose. Perhaps, at long last, the winds of positive change are beginning to blow through the Theatre of Dreams.
Of course, for those of an Old Trafford persuasion, it’s far too early to get carried away, especially after last season’s somber 15th-place finish – a reminder that the road to redemption is as long as it is winding. Still, a glimpse at the potential lineup for 2025/26 might just be enough to bring a few cautious smiles.

The Premier League table could look very different in some key areas this time next year.
Goalkeeper & Defence
Emiliano Martinez; Leny Yoro, Matthijs de Ligt, Lisandro Martinez
Goalkeeper is often earmarked as the loneliest position on the pitch, but given how often the Red Devils were forced to absorb pressure last season, it quickly became one of the busiest – and most unforgiving – roles. Andre Onana faced a relentless barrage of shots, and with eight errors leading to goals (more than any other Premier League player), he ultimately proved surplus to requirements. United fans will no doubt welcome reports that the club is accelerating their interest in Emiliano Martinez.
The Aston Villa shot-stopper has claimed the last two Yashin Trophies as the world’s best goalkeeper and famously starred as Argentina’s penalty shootout hero in the 2022 World Cup final, where he also picked up the Golden Glove. The 32-year-old would offer far more reliability between the posts than Onana, and his fearless mentality – paired with his maverick leadership – could help steady and even elevate United’s backline.
When fit, Lisandro Martinez is as solid as they come, while Matthijs de Ligt and Leny Yoro both have another gear or two to unlock – especially the latter, who’s still only 19. But all three may soon be glancing nervously over their shoulders at Ayden Heaven, who has looked assured every time he’s been handed a shirt by Amorim.
Midfield
Amad, Bruno Fernandes, Casemiro, Patrick Dorgu
In Ruben Amorim’s 3-4-3 system, the wide midfielders must possess the engine to attack and defend in equal measure, making them arguably the most vital cogs in the machine. In Amad and Patrick Dorgu, the Red Devils may have found just that. While Dorgu has occasionally come under fire for appearing a touch raw, there’s no denying he has the right ingredients for success in the new era: energy, determination, and most importantly, heart.
As for Amad, caution has never been in his vocabulary. At various flashpoints during his United tenure, he’s looked like his side’s best player. With 10 goals and 11 assists across all competitions last season, he trailed only Bruno Fernandes in terms of creative output – a remarkable feat as the captain has once again pledged his loyalty to M16, rebuffing lucrative offers from Saudi Arabia this summer.
Creatively, United still revolve around Fernandes. No player has created more chances in the Premier League over the past two seasons. And while his vision has often gone unrewarded thanks to a misfiring frontline, the tide may be turning judging by the reinforcements coming in. Anchoring the midfield, Casemiro looks set to reprise his role as the enforcer-in-chief – a role he reminded everyone he still excels in after storming back into the first-team fold earlier this year with shades of the beast he once was at Real Madrid as he started each of United’s Europa League knockout matches.

Attack
Bryan Mbeumo, Viktor Gyokeres, Matheus Cunha
The most exciting part of football is goals – and next season, Man United fans could finally see them flow by the gallon like in the old days again. With Premier League duo Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha already through the door, their attacking unit looks worlds apart from the game of blackjack Old Trafford was forced to play whenever Rasmus Hojlund or Zirkzee found themselves bearing down on goal.
It’s in the attacking department where the shift in strategy from Ratcliffe and co. has been most obvious. Gone are the high-stakes punts – in their place are players who bring reliability, impact, and experience. Both Mbeumo and Cunha know what it takes to thrive in the physical grind of England’s top flight, and United’s interest in Viktor Gyokeres suggests they’re not done yet.
Tall, powerful, fast, and armed with a cannonball of a shot, the Sporting frontman – who flourished under Amorim – netted a staggering 54 goals in 52 appearances last season. A natural-born goalscorer, Gyokeres could be United’s answer to Erling Haaland, and he has all the hallmarks of a striker destined for greatness should he reunite with Amorim in the coming weeks.
