Manchester City confident of signing Rayan Cherki despite first bid refusal

According to Sacha Tavolieri, Manchester City remain confident of signing Rayan Cherki (21) from Lyon this summer despite seeing their first bid rejected by the Ligue 1 club. Talks remain open between the two respective clubs, and the playmaker wants to make the switch to the Premier League.

City’s first bid matched the unofficial release clause that was agreed between Cherki and his formative club. If the 21-year-old signed a new contract, Les Gones agreed to reintegrate him into the first team and accept a bid to allow him to leave if an offer worth €22.5m arrived for his services. The attacking midfielder has already agreed personal terms.

However, release clauses are illegal in France, and with the agreement more of a promise, Lyon have no intention to accept the Premier League club’s offer. Despite OL refusing the offer, Tavolieri understands that signs are pointing in the direction of Cherki joining Manchester City.
