Manchester United are starting to look towards a new manager ahead of the summer, with Michael Carrick being at the helm until the end of the campaign – and GIVEMESPORT’s senior transfer correspondent, Ben Jacobs, believes the club could go in for Marseille boss Roberto De Zerbi.
United sacked Ruben Amorim at the start of the month, and although Darren Fletcher and Carrick have taken control of the first-team for the time being, a permanent solution will be required in the coming months.
And that could see the Red Devils go in for the Italian gaffer, with Jacobs believing they are ‘serious’ over their interest.
Jacobs: Man Utd ‘Serious’ in Roberto De Zerbi Chase
Speaking to The United Stand, GIVEMESPORT journalist Ben Jacobs stated that any reports linking De Zerbi with a move to Old Trafford are on the mark. And that means United could be ‘very serious’ about the current Marseille gaffer becoming their next man at the helm.
Jacobs said: “I’m told that reports linking Roberto De Zerbi are accurate as well.
“Manchester United are going to be very serious about him.”
United have approached up-and-coming bosses for the job in the past, with Ruben Amorim and Erik ten Hag being targeted, though their tenures have ultimately ended in disappointment. At least with De Zerbi, they would be appointing a manager with Premier League experience, and a record of qualifying for European football with an English side.
De Zerbi’s Premier League Record at Brighton Was Impressive Under Pressure
United are right to want De Zerbi through the door. He won 14 of his 32 games in charge of Brighton in the 2022-23 campaign, helping them to finish sixth in the Premier League, being labelled as ‘one of the world’s best managers’ in the process by Arne Slot.
Although that form slightly dried up the following season, with just 12 wins from 38 and an eventual 11th placed finish in the league, his second season was thwarted.
The Seagulls sold first-team players Robert Sanchez, Alexis Mac Allister and Moises Caicedo in the same summer, whilst Leandro Trossard was sold to Arsenal just months after he joined.
And, with promising first-team midfielder Enock Mwepu forced to retire just a month into his tenure after a detected heart condition, De Zerbi wasn’t given the best hand.
United will have to make promises to De Zerbi on the recruitment front if he is to succeed as boss, but having trusted previous managers with big budgets, that shouldn’t be too much of a dream for the Italian, who has got Marseille firing over the last 18 months with a second-placed finish in Ligue 1.
