Fabrizio Romano has shared an update on Manchester United’s plans to appoint a new manager this summer, with talks expected in the coming weeks.
The Red Devils sacked Ruben Amorim in January after an inconsistent start to the season and a poor 14 months in charge at Old Trafford, with legendary midfielder Michael Carrick brought in as his replacement on an interim basis until the end of the season.
The former England international has won four games out of four so far, including wins over Man City and Arsenal, and there have been some calls for him to get the job permanently as a result, although several names have been linked to the role.
Man Utd to Start Manager Talks in Weeks
Carrick’s performance has seen him tipped for the role, but Man Utd have been insistent that they will undergo a complete process to identify the ideal candidate before the start of next season.
Speaking to Men in Blazers on his YouTube channel, Romano was asked about the current status of the process, and revealed that he expects things to ramp up in the next weeks.
“So basically, what’s happening is that they are really appreciating Carrick,” he said.
“At the same time, internally, because at the moment there are still no meetings with other managers, no meetings with representatives of other managers, it’s still early, but I think in the next weeks, for sure, Manchester United will start to keep discussing internally and deciding where they want to go.”
Man Utd Can’t Make Snap Manager Decisions
While Carrick’s start to life in charge at Old Trafford has been exceptional, the club can’t make snap decisions about the future of the club based on such a small sample size.
The 44-year-old has galvanised the squad, raised morale and got the team playing exciting, effective football, but he has yet to face any adversity in his stint in charge, and that could see things go downhill very quickly potentially.
The club are best served to stick to their plan, assess all the candidates and potential options, and then make their decision later in the season and towards the summer, so they can plan effectively for the transfer window and next season.
If Carrick can maintain his excellent performances for a while, then there is no reason why he can’t be involved in the race for the full-time job, but the decision makers are doing the right thing currently by not acting on emotion.
