Manchester United right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka has “surprised” people at Old Trafford with his recent form, journalist Steve Bates believes.
Wan-Bissaka was believed to be on his way out of the club in January, amid interest from various Premier League sides.
Manchester United news – Wan-Bissaka
Wan-Bissaka’s United career was over. Or at least that was the perception of many ahead of the January transfer window, as reports from the Manchester Evening News emerged detailing the right-back’s exit plan from Old Trafford. Amid interest from West Ham United and other Premier League clubs, it appeared Wan-Bissaka’s days at the Red Devils were limited.
The same report suggests the £90,000-a-week star was made aware he wasn’t part of new boss Erik ten Hag’s plans as early as last season, with United rejecting offers for the defender in the summer window as they were unable to find a replacement. West Ham and former club Crystal Palace, who Wan-Bissaka arrived at Old Trafford from for £50 million in July 2019, were among those vying for his signature.
While a summer move may not have materialised, interest in Wan-Bissaka picked up again ahead of the January window, with Wolverhampton Wanderers reportedly joining West Ham and Palace in the pursuit. But now, with the winter window in full swing a sensational U-turn looks on the cards with Wan-Bissaka beginning to resurrect his United career.
What’s Bates said about Wan-Bissaka and United?
Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, journalist Bates indicated that Wan-Bissaka does have a future at Old Trafford, despite interest from different Premier League outfits.
“I think he may have surprised one or two people at Old Trafford,” Bates told GMS.
“That’s definitely the case because a lot of people thought he was on the way out, especially in January.”
What next for Wan-Bissaka at United?
While unlikely to edge first-choice Diogo Dalot out of the starting XI, ten Hag has shown in recent weeks that minutes will be available for Wan-Bissaka moving forwards. Having made more appearances in the five matches after the World Cup break than all 23 United matches before that, Wan-Bissaka’s United career may not be over after all.
With United having progressed through all three cup competitions, it’s likely Wan-Bissaka could feature heavily for ten Hag’s side throughout the remainder of the campaign. Providing an assist during United’s recent League Cup victory over Burnley, Wan-Bissaka has shown signs of adapting to the Dutch manager’s progressive style of play.
Journalist Bates recently told GMS that Wan-Bissaka had “rescued” his United career, and while the rumours linking him with a move away are likely to persist throughout the January window, a clear path towards a future at Old Trafford now exists for the 25-year-old.
