Man Utd now ‘unlikely’ to bring £103m striker to Old Trafford

Manchester United are “unlikely” to sign World Cup star Gonçalo Ramos in January, journalist Jacque Talbot has told GIVEMESPORT.

The Portuguese international shone at the recent World Cup, netting three goals and picking up one assist for the Seleção as they reached the last eight.

What’s the latest news involving Ramos and United?

Having started the tournament as Cristiano Ronaldo’s deputy, by the end of Portugal’s World Cup run Ramos had overtaken the five-time Ballon d’Or winner in the pecking order. Now, there are suggestions that Ramos could also succeed Ronaldo at United as well.

Departing in an unsavoury fashion, Ronaldo’s return to United may have lasted just 18 months but its impact is still being felt at Old Trafford. Heading into the January transfer window, Erik ten Hag remains desperate for options at centre-forward as he looks to guide United into the top four.

It had looked as if United were days away from announcing the signing of Cody Gakpo from PSV Eindhoven, only for a late Liverpool swoop to snatch the deal away from the Red Devils. It’s left United’s options in the market somewhat limited, with ten Hag recently telling the club website they’ll only spend money “when we find the right player”.

One man that would certainly fit that bill is Benfica’s Ramos, who according to a report in Portugal, is high on the list of potential United targets. It’s believed Ramos would be available in January but only for the £103 million price tag Benfica are demanding, as per reports.

Having enjoyed a breakout season in Portugal, Ramos has seamlessly slotted into the role left behind by Liverpool’s Darwin Nunez, with the 21-year-old boasting 15 goals in 22 appearances for Benfica so far. Yet, as the January window edges closer, a move to United appears unlikely for Ramos.

What’s Talbot said about Ramos and United?

Speaking in an interview with GIVEMESPORT, Talbot revealed Ramos is not expected to arrive at Old Trafford in the January window.

“United apparently are keen [on Ramos],” Talbot told GMS.

“But the noises from Portugal now suggest United are unlikely to get him for whatever reason.

“It might be because of the fee. It might be because the interest is only tentative, so it depends really.”

Who else might United target instead of Ramos?

Having said so himself, it’s no secret that ten Hag is hoping to bring a striker through the Old Trafford doors in January. But with Gakpo having slipped away and their remaining options limited, it could be a struggle for United to find their ideal player in an already congested market.

One name that has recently emerged as a potential option is Martin Terrier, who has started the season strongly for French side Stade Rennes. A report in France suggests that United and Tottenham Hotspur are eyeing up a move for the 25-year-old forward, who has scored 11 times in 21 games this season.

Elsewhere, a shock return to Old Trafford could be on the cards for former United flop, Memphis Depay, who is said to be on the way out of Barcelona in January. Depay left United for Lyon in 2017, but BBC Sport journalist Simon Stone recently revealed his name has been mentioned with a move back to the North West.
