Man Utd now secure ‘agreement’ for new signing at Old Trafford

Manchester United have reached an agreement with Besiktas to terminate Wout Weghorst’s loan deal at the Turkish club from Burnley, as he prepares to make the temporary switch to Erik ten Hag’s side at Old Trafford, transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has told GiveMeSport.

The Red Devils have been looking at centre-forward options since the termination of Cristiano Ronaldo’s contract in November.

Man Utd transfer news – Wout Weghorst

According to Romano, Manchester United have now reached an agreement with Besiktas and Weghorst, with the Dutchman set to move on loan to Old Trafford for the remainder of the season.

The Red Devils are set to pay Besiktas €3m (£2.6m) to cancel the striker’s loan deal in Turkey, but a switch can only go ahead if the Süper Lig club can find themselves a suitable replacement for the 30-year-old.

According to talkSPORT, Weghorst was willing to pay his own release clause to get a move to United over the line, something which Alex Crook told GiveMeSport will encourage the Old Trafford faithful.

And Romano has confirmed to GMS that the Premier League side have an agreement in place with both Besiktas and parent club Burnley for Weghorst – who has been dubbed a “machine” by Jan Aage Fjørtoft – to link up with ten Hag’s squad for the remainder of the season.

What has Romano said about Man Utd and Weghorst?

Romano told GiveMeSport: “From what I’m told, they have an agreement with the Besiktas for around €3m to terminate the loan deal from Burnley. They have an agreement with Burnley on the loan deal until the end of the season for Weghorst.”

Will Weghorst be a good signing for Man Utd?

Having scored just two goals in 20 games since his £12m arrival at Burnley 12 months ago, Weghorst could be considered an underwhelming signing for the Red Devils going into the second half of the season.

However, the 6 foot 6 centre-forward seems to have rediscovered his scoring touch at Besiktas, bagging eight goals and providing four assists in 16 appearances in the Süper Lig this campaign, as per Transfermarkt.

The 19-cap Netherlands international also enjoyed an impressive spell at Wolfsburg before his move to Turf Moor, scoring 70 goals in 144 appearances for the Bundesliga side, suggesting that he is capable of performing to a high standard in one of Europe’s elite leagues regularly.

Therefore, as a short-term option, ten Hag may just feel that he’s secured the ideal Ronaldo replacement as the Red Devils look for a positive conclusion to the season.
