Manchester United are ‘more likely’ to sign Cody Gakpo than James Maddison over the coming months, according to journalist Dean Jones.
The Red Devils are believed to be in the market for reinforcements at the top end of the pitch after losing the likes of Edinson Cavani, Paul Pogba and Jesse Lingard over the summer.
What is the latest news involving Gakpo?
United were heavily linked with a move for Gakpo in the previous transfer window before they opted to bring in Antony from Ajax in an £86 million deal instead.
It then seemed as though their Premier League rivals Leeds and Southampton were in pole position to sign the 23-year-old, but his outstanding form for PSV Eindhoven has seemingly put them out of contention.
A recent report from The Athletic states that Gakpo is ‘not in favour’ of a switch to Elland Road and that Real Madrid and Arsenal are now amongst his potential suitors after matching Erling Haaland’s goal contribution tally in 2022/23.
The Sun also claim that United may revive their interest in the Netherlands international, who could be available for around £30m.
Gakpo’s current contract doesn’t expire until June 2026, leaving PSV in a very strong position around the negotiating table, and they will surely be hoping a bidding war ensues for his signature.
What has Jones said about Gakpo?
James Maddison is another forward-thinking player reportedly attracting the attention of a host of top teams due to his form and the fact his existing deal has just over 18 months left to run.

However, Jones believes that if United ‘were to sign an attacker’, then Gakpo is a more probable target than the Leicester City ace.
He told GiveMeSport: “If they were to sign an attacker, I think it’s more likely they go for Cody Gakpo. So, I’m sure it’s one they’ve spoken about, but I don’t see it as one that’s going to happen.”
Where would Gakpo fit in at Man Utd?
Gakpo has predominantly lined up on the left-wing throughout his senior career, allowing him to cut in onto his favoured right foot and pose a threat to the opposition’s goal.
The 6 foot 2 star is also capable of playing upfront, though, meaning United manager Erik ten Hag would be able to add strength in depth to a couple of positions should he arrive in the red half of Manchester.
Jadon Sancho, Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial are the options available to Ten Hag on the left flank at this moment in time, although he has largely featured the latter two through the middle.
