Man Utd ‘meeting with £28.3m star’s agents’ over agreement at Old Trafford

Manchester United are ‘in conversations’ with Diogo Dalot as they look to tie him down to a new contract, transfer insider Fabrizio Romano has informed GiveMeSport.

The 23-year-old’s current deal at Old Trafford runs until June 2024, following Erik Ten Hag’s decision to trigger one-year extensions for Dalot, Marcus Rashford, Fred and Luke Shaw.

Man United transfer news – Diogo Dalot

GOAL has recently that Dalot is content at Manchester United and “loves” the club, as negotiations continue over a new deal.

Speaking to the media before the Red Devils’ victory over Charlton Athletic in the EFL Cup quarter-final, Dalot stated: “I love this club and I love to play for this club. We will see how things progress, but we are in a good direction for the team and, for me, this is the most important and, hopefully, individually I can still help the team.”

The Portugal international has become the preferred choice at right-back under Ten Hag, making 23 appearances in 2022/23, scoring once and assisting two goals in the process, as per Transfermarkt.

Salary Sport detail that Dalot earns 32k-a-week on his current contract, which could be set to increase if he pens a new deal at the Premier League giants.

What has Fabrizio Romano said about the Diogo Dalot situation?

Transfer insider Romano has claimed that Manchester United are in talks with Dalot regarding a contract extension, having already had ‘some meetings with his agents’.

Romano told GMS: “They’re in conversations for Diogo Dalot. They already had some meetings with his agents“.

The Old Trafford club could well enter the market for another right-back this month, with Aaron Wan-Bissaka potentially being allowed to leave United on loan in search of minutes, according to Foot Mercato.

Should Manchester United give Diogo Dalot a contract extension?

Given his performances this season and also in 2021/22, the former Porto star should be given improved terms as he has become an influential figure on the pitch for the Red Devils.

Prior to the Manchester derby on Saturday, Dalot had managed to accumulate an impressive 85% tackle success rate from 27 challenges this Premier League campaign, making him a tough nut to crack for opposition wingers. Furthermore, his attacking intent should not be ignored, with the 23-year-old playing an underrated role in Manchester United’s offensive patterns of play.

WhoScored has unveiled that Dalot had made an average of 1.5 key passes per match in the English top flight heading into the weekend, making him a handy player to have in attacking build-up phases. At his age, the Braga-born ace has a lot of time on his side to take his game to an even higher level under Dutch boss Ten Hag.

It also makes sense to protect Dalot’s value in the transfer market. Right now, he’s rated at €32m (£28.3m) by Transfermarkt, a rather modest amount considering he’s been one of United’s most regular starters in the Premier League this season.

The Portuguese also has a big fan in former United team-mate and countryman Cristiano Ronaldo, who sung Dalot’s praises during his ill-fated interview with Piers Morgan, stating: “In Manchester United I can mention Dalot, he’s young, but very professional but I don’t doubt that he’s going to have longevity in football because he’s young, he’s smart, intelligent and he’s very professional.”

Of course, there is the reality that if United don’t tie him down, other clubs may start to show interest and leave the Old Trafford outfit susceptible to losing one of their most trusted players in the next couple of windows.

One report in Spain (via Daily Mail) suggested that Barcelona were sniffing around last year. However, it looks like Dalot signing a new contract at Manchester United is nothing more than a formality at this point.
