Manchester United are still interested in signing Bayern Munich midfielder Leon Goretzka, according to journalist Florian Plettenberg.
The Red Devils bolstered their midfield department with the signing of Manuel Ugarte from Paris Saint-Germain last summer. They are likely to look for more reinforcements next year.
Atalanta star Ederson has already been linked with United, and they reportedly also have Goretzka on their radar.
The German, who has been described as ‘world-class‘ by the Bundesliga’s official website, has made just two starts under manager Vincent Kompany this term.
Bayern are in urgent need of funds to sign Bayer Leverkusen’s Florian Wirtz, and they are considering Goretzka’s departure as a result.
Goretzka would be a backward signing for United
The 29-year-old has been a key player for Bayern over the years, but he is no longer in his prime.
Goretzka came up with a strong performance against Augsburg today, but there have been questions regarding his consistency for some time.
United need to replace Casemiro and Christian Eriksen soon, but signing Goretzka on a permanent deal would represent a backward step.
The Schalke graduate will be 30 in February next year. He could be signed for a cut-price fee, but his wages are a potential stumbling block.
Goretzka earns around £208,000 per week at the Munich giants and he could hold out for a similar package to move to Old Trafford.
Signing the German would not represent a good piece of business. The club should focus on landing a younger central midfielder.
The speculation could be agent-driven. United’s name is probably being used to encourage interest from other European clubs.
