Manchester United are preparing themselves for a ‘tough negotiation’ as they attempt to lure Antony to Old Trafford, according to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano.
The Red Devils have endured a woeful start to the campaign, but boss Erik ten Hag could freshen up his squad ahead of the September 1 deadline.
What’s the latest news involving Antony?
According to The Athletic, Manchester United have revived their interest in Antony and tested Ajax’s resolve with a fresh bid.
However, the report suggests the proposal – worth just short of £68million – was rejected by the reigning Eredivisie champions and, as a result, the Red Devils are facing a challenge as they continue to pursue the nine-cap Brazil international.
Romano has revealed that Manchester United are planning to approach Ajax again before the transfer window slams shut.
But, with the Dutch giants desperate to hold onto Antony, PSV Eindhoven’s Cody Gakpo has been identified as an alternative option by ten Hag.
Transfer guru Romano has previously told GIVEMESPORT that Manchester United may need to fork out as much as £75million to get a deal for Antony over the line.
What has Fabrizio Romano said about Antony?
Romano understands that Manchester United will find it difficult to sign Antony, particularly having already raided Ajax to complete the £56.7million acquisition of Lisandro Martinez.
The journalist believes head coach Alfred Schreuder is desperate to keep the winger in the Dutch capital.
Romano told GIVEMESPORT: “Manchester United, after spending big money on Lisandro Martinez from Ajax, know that it’s going to be a tough negotiation for Antony.
“Ajax have not had an easy beginning to their season, with a Super Cup loss against PSV, so losing Antony after many players they have already lost – like Andre Onana, Ryan Gravenberch, Noussair Mazraoui, Sebastien Haller and, of course, Martinez – it would be complicated for the new manager to work in the best conditions this season.”
Would Antony be a good signing for Manchester United?
Manchester United’s disastrous start to the season has coincided with Cristiano Ronaldo wanting to quit Old Trafford, potentially leaving them short of options in the attacking third.
In a bid to turn the Red Devils’ form around, ten Hag may be better off targeting players he knows well and Antony certainly fits into that category, having selected him 79 times during his Ajax reign.
The 22-year-old has also been in prolific form during the early stages of the 2022/23 campaign, which will be another attraction for the Manchester United chief.
Antony has now chalked up close to 60 goal contributions during his club career and he could play a key role in lifting spirits at Old Trafford.
