Manchester United are keeping close tabs on Aston Villa midfielder Amadou Onana ahead of the summer transfer window, according to reports.
The Old Trafford side have reportedly identified the Belgium international as a potential target, having long admired Onana, even before he joined Villa in 2024.
United were interested in signing the 24-year-old when he was still an Everton player and could reignite their interest closer to the transfer window reopening.
Under manager Unai Emery, Onana has established himself as a key player in Villa’s squad, helping the West Midlands club sit third in the Premier League with 12 games to play this season.
Man Utd Keen on Amadou Onana
According to journalist Pete O’Rourke, United have identified Onana as one of their top midfield targets ahead of the summer, although luring him out of Villa Park may prove a difficult task.
The Belgium international appears settled at the club and is under contract until the summer of 2029, which puts Villa in a strong negotiating position.
The West Midlands side will also be looking to make a profit from any potential sale, having splashed out £50m on Onana’s arrival from Everton in 2024.
The ‘exceptional’ 24-year-old midfielder has made 24 appearances for Villa in all competitions this season, scoring two Premier League goals in wins over Brighton and Bournemouth.
Onana Could Replace Casemiro
Manchester United have made the signing of a new midfielder one of their priorities for the summer transfer window, with a fresh arrival likely to replace veteran Casemiro.
The Brazilian has announced he will be leaving Old Trafford at the end of his contract in June, following a three-year spell at the club.
United have several potential targets in mind to replace Casemiro, including Nottingham Forest midfielder Elliot Anderson, who is also a target for rivals Manchester City.
The Red Devils are unbeaten in their five games under interim boss Michael Carrick and next take on Everton away on Monday.
Why Onana Would Be a Strong Fit for Man Utd
Amid reports linking Onana with a surprise switch to Manchester United, we asked ChatGPT why the Belgium international would be a strong fit for the Red Devils’ midfield:
- Physical presence and ball-winning – Amadou Onana would add height, strength, and defensive coverage, helping United protect the back line and win midfield duels.
- Athleticism and transition control – His mobility would allow United to defend large spaces, recover quickly, and move the ball forward with purpose after regains.
- Age profile and tactical fit – Still developing, Onana suits a long-term midfield rebuild while offering immediate intensity and structure alongside technical players.
