Wolfsburg confirmed on Wednesday that Lukas Nmecha will miss the World Cup with a knee injury that he obtained during Wolfsburg’s 2-0 win against Borussia Dortmund.
Nmecha was subbed on in the 75th minute for Jonas Wind and a challenge by Mats Hummels in the 84th minute resulted in the injury which Nmecha was able to play through. Further examination diagnosed the German forward with a ruptured patellar tendon, but surgery won’t be needed.
This poses a problem for Germany as they already have Timo Werner out for the World Cup and the addition of Nmecha means there is a lack of a striking options which will result in more calls for the likes of Niclas Füllkrug and Youssoufa Moukoko.
This season Nmecha has four goals in 12 games this season under Niko Kovac. His previous form saw him called up to the previous international squad.
