As reported by Bild, Lucas Hernández’s contract extension is still going to happen despite him suffering a cruciate ligament injury in France’s World Cup opener against Australia.
Before the World Cup, Hernández and Bayern Munich had already begun talks over an extension and per the report, “an agreement was imminent.” This is yet to change despite his injury, showing Bayern’s trust in the defender who can play centrally as well at left-back.
Hernández’s current contract expires in 2024 and a renewal is expected to take place imminently. Hernández is still Bayern’s most expensive signing after joining from Atletico Madrid for €80m in 2019.
During France’s 4-1 win against Australia in their opening World Cup game, Hernández went off in the 13th minute and was replaced by his brother Theo, who would go on to assist Adrien Rabiot.
Hernández has only played 10 games this season and has dealt with other injury issues, suffering a torn muscle bundle that saw him miss 10 games between September and October. The Frenchman only made his comeback in Bayern’s 3-2 win against Hertha Berlin on November 5.
