Speaking in a press conference ahead of Bayern Munich’s Champions League tie against Barcelona on Tuesday, head coach Julian Nagelsmann has confirmed that both Lucas Hernandez and Marcel Sabitzer will start.
“I’m already clear about a number of positions,” Nagelsmann told reporters. “All three centre-backs are playing at a high level. I don’t know who will start alongside Lucas Hernandez, I haven’t decided yet. Marcel Sabitzer will also play alongside Joshua Kimmich.”
Nagelsmann also stated that Dayot Upamecano “has had more games with Lewandowski and always defended well against him,” but states that he’s undecided. Hernandez was rested against Stuttgart on Saturday as Matthijs de Ligt played alongside Upamecano.
Leon Goretzka also returned from injury and played 90 minutes against Stuttgart as Sabitzer was rested but the German feels a strain and so a start against Bayern wouldn’t be possible. Goretzka missed the opening four Bundesliga games following knee surgery and made his comeback in a five minute cameo against Union Berlin, before playing a full match against Stuttgart on Saturday.
