In a recent report, The Times (subscription required) stated that Liverpool have rejected Bayern Munich’s offer for Sadio Mane. It is believed that the Reds have decided to decline the German club’s latest bid which would reach £30m based on performance-based add-ons.
Mane’s Impressive Form In English Football
Mane enjoyed a brilliant campaign at Merseyside as he managed to put in a run of influential displays for the Reds in the final third. The 30-year-old deserves a lot of credit for scoring 23 goals and securing five assists in 51 matches for Liverpool this season on all fronts.
The Sedhiou-born talent has been a consistent performer in the final third based on his average of 2.9 shots, 1.2 key passes and 1.4 dribbles per 90 minutes in the Premier League. He has even been accurate with his ball distribution after making 77.3% of his attempted passes in league football (stats via whoscored).
What Should Be Liverpool Boss Jurgen Klopp’s Play With Regards To Mane’s Future?
Mane has got the pace to make some driving runs in behind the opponent’s backline. He can use his powerful frame to keep hold of the ball and is proficient at making a few clever turns in and around the opposition penalty box.
The Senegal international has been a reliable source for goals at Liverpool over the past few years. Mane is primarily a left-sided wide player but can even fill in as a right-winger or act as a striker down the middle if needed. Hence, it is no surprise that a top club like Bayern Munich are showing interest in recruiting him this summer.
Mane’s current contract with the Reds is set to expire at the end of next season. For now, Jurgen Klopp would be wise to keep hold of him unless the Merseyside club can find a suitable replacement.
If Liverpool end up signing someone like Benfica’s Darwin Nunez, Klopp could then afford to let Mane leave and use the money generated from his sale to strengthen other areas of his squad. At 30, the Senegalese sensation might still have a few good seasons left in him but the Reds would be running the risk of losing him as a free agent next summer which is why it is integral that they move him on for a fair transfer fee in this off-season.
