Liverpool will be “very open minded” about the possibility of bringing a new midfielder to Anfield during the January window, transfer insider Dean Jones has told GIVEMESPORT.
It comes after ex-Reds star Jamie Carragher criticised Liverpool’s transfer committee following the recent defeat to Brentford.
What’s the latest news involving Liverpool and a midfielder?
After being less than one-and-a-half games from securing a historic quadruple last season, to trailing the league leaders by 16 points at the turn of the year – it’s been a spectacular fall from grace for Liverpool.
Manchester City’s dramatic final-day comeback against Aston Villa and a Thibaut Courtois-inspired performance in the Champions League final was all that stopped the Reds from winning four trophies last time around, yet with almost half of the current campaign already gone Liverpool are being forced to look down, rather than up.
Already having lost more than double the number of Premier League games they did last season, there has been a clear drop-off from Jurgen Klopp’s side, with many suggesting midfield is the problem area. With the likes of Jordan Henderson and Thiago Alcantara both over the age of 30, and usual midfield stalwart, Fabinho, struggling for form, Liverpool could be forced into the January market in search of reinforcements.
Of course, the one-time Premier League champions have already welcomed a new signing this month, with Cody Gakpo arriving from PSV Eindhoven in a deal worth up to £45 million. However, as the recent loss to Brentford showed, Klopp’s side may want to turn their attention to the midfield should they wish to continue competing at the right end of the table.
What’s Jones said about Liverpool and a midfielder?
Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, Jones revealed that Liverpool would be willing to re-enter the market in January should the right midfield option become available.
“What I would say, Liverpool are very open minded about this position,” Jones told GMS.
“They have shown their muscle in this market so recently it’s hard to discard anything at this point – especially in a position they need to fix more than they do in attack.”
Who could Liverpool sign in midfield in January?
It’s no secret that Liverpool are interested in Borussia Dortmund starlet Jude Bellingham, with the Merseyside club reportedly favourites to sign the 19-year-old, ahead of Real Madrid and City. Liverpool have been interested in the dynamic midfielder for almost a decade, as per The Athletic, yet any move for Bellingham would have to wait until the summer.
It leaves Liverpool with a midfield conundrum in the present, with Klopp’s side desperate for added numbers in that position and Fiorentina star Sofyan Amrabat is one name linked with an Anfield switch. A World Cup protagonist for semi-finalists Morocco, reports from Italy suggest Liverpool are locked in a transfer battle with Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur for the 26-year-old’s signature.
Elsewhere, there had been rumours circulating that Liverpool were interested in Enzo Fernandez before Chelsea took control of the deal, whereas suggestions the Reds are keeping tabs on Atalanta midfielder Teun Koopmeiners have also surfaced.
